A young Malay man picked up a wallet without knowing what was in it and when he found out that it contained a lot of money, he returned it intact to an elderly Singaporean man. The act of kindness moved the old man to tears.
The 80-year-old man, who was identified as Zou by the Malaysian media, said that his bag contained S$1,000 and more than RM600. On May 27, when he took the bus from Seremban to Kluang, the bag fell on the bus. The young man picked it up later, and he spent nearly an hour checking with the bus company as to how to contact the old man. He finally managed to get in touch with the nephew of the old man and returned the bag to its owner.
Zou’s niece, later, contacted the media to highlight the young man’s good deeds. She said that her uncle came to Kluang to look for her at the beginning of the month and then went to her hometown Tanjung Sepat in Selangor to visit her aunt, where he stayed for two weeks. On the 27th of May, his nephew took him to Seremban Bus Station so that he can take the bus back to Kluang.
She said that her uncle was going to get off at a different stop than the one he was supposed to get off at by mistake. Maybe he was nervous when he got off the bus and his bag fell out, she said.
She pointed out that according to what she had learned from the Malay youth, he was sitting behind his uncle. When he got off the bus at Kluang Station, he found a leather bag, so he picked it up and went to the bus company counter to find the owner.
Zou’s niece said, thankfully, that the bus ticket in her uncle’s wallet contained her cousin’s number.
“My cousin’s cell phone number was recorded when I bought the bus ticket, and my cousin notified me after receiving the call. I saw the man at the bus stop at around 5 pm and got my bag back, and he was already waiting at the station at that time for about an hour.”
She said that on the second day, she again asked the man to meet his uncle so that her uncle could thank him personally. The uncle gave him a red envelope to express his gratitude, but the young man refused. Only when her uncle insisted that his token of appreciation be accepted did the young man accept it reluctantly.
She said that her uncle was moved by the kindness and honesty of the man and kept crying. No one thought that the wallet and money could be recovered.
She said that in fact, her uncle also met a lot of good-hearted people that day. For instance, when he got off at the wrong stop, someone was willing to send him from Seri Lalang to Taman Intan (his right destination), among other good deeds.
A Facebook group which highlighted the good deed of the young Malay man has gone viral with over 4,500 likes and several hundred shares.
